Position Title: Assistant Grant Writer (Intern)
Posting Date: August 26, 2011

Job Summary:  Provide research and writing support to the Resource Development Committee's grant writing efforts. Will be required to attend monthly or bi-monthly meetings to research new grant writing opportunities. Will work with other subcommittees to provide grant support to existing or new programs during the 2011-2012 year. Should be able to work independently and communicate often and clearly with other grant writing team members. Other than periodic meetings, most work may be done remotely or at home. Intern must be willing and able to make site visits around Fort Collins to understand the programming needs and on-the-ground projects that the grants will support.

Reports to: Resource Development Committee Chairperson and Grant Writing Subcommittee Chairperson.

Qualifications: Interest in grant writing and ability to research independently. Should have strong writing and analytical skills. Previous grant-writing experience preferred but not required. An excellent way to become familiar with non-profit grants and funding sources.

Duration and Compensation:Should be available from September 1, 2011 through at least April 1, 2011. Current students welcome to apply. We ask for at least a six (6) month commitment.

Job Title: Horticultural Therapy Specialist, Garden Time Director, PT


Job Summary: Provide horticultural therapy (HT) sessions to youth ages 10-18 at a residential treatment facility in Fort Collins, CO. You will need to act on your own initiative and be self-directed in HT tasks.

Reports to: The Growing Project (TGP) Executive Director and contracted facility director

Qualifications:  BA in horticulture, social science or education (specialization in vocational education, therapeutic recreation or occupational therapy or equivalent work experience also acceptable). Registered horticultural therapist (HTR or HTM) is preferred but not required.  Can be working toward registration, and/or pursuing coursework in horticultural therapy.  Must have excellent communication and human relations skills. Must posses a valid driver’s license. Must submit to a background check.

Experience: Experience with youth, particularly at-risk populations, is preferred with practical experience in horticultural and/or vocational services. Experience in food crop production, organic soil fertility and pest management. Supervisory experience preferred.

Contacts: Staff and supervisors of contracted residential treatment facility, The Growing Project staff, board and Executive Director, volunteers, youth residents, visiting families and therapists, general public

Working Conditions: Must possess full range of body motions: bending, sitting, walking, reaching, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.  Contact with adverse weather conditions, sun, noise, dirt, heat, cold and interruptions. 

Job Requirements:
Develop and facilitate HT programming twice a week for duration of contract for youth clients at residential treatment facility
o   HT sessions focused on vocational and social therapeutic outcomes
o   Food-production oriented
o   Environmental education and urban agriculture experiential learning
  • Coordinate schedule of HT programming with residential treatment center staff and TGP volunteers, including guest speakers, special events, and periodic work field trips with clients to local farms
  • Maintain specified documentation of individual client and group outcomes, as well as overall program evaluation 
  • Work closely with residential treatment facility chef to coordinate planting and production of food crops based on needs of the facility kitchen.
  • Work closely with project volunteers to provide HT sessions and farm-based experiential community service learning opportunities
  • Responsible for acquiring all materials needed for programming sessions, through coordination with TGP, residential treatment facility staff, volunteers, community members, donors, etc.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies, materials and plant materials for program (including materials purchased, loaned and in-kind donations)
  • Work with all contacts to assure highest quality experience for youth resident clients
  • Maintain satisfactory working relationships with TGP board, staff and executive director, as well as staff and director of contracted residential treatment facility
  • Maintain a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to all contacts
  • Assist with fund raising efforts for the Garden Time HT program
  • Attend monthly board meetings and give updates of GT programming at each meeting
  • Perform other duties as requested by management
  • This position will continue to expand upon and develop existing programming that was originally implemented in Summer 2010
  • You will be employed directly by the residential treatment facility

Duration and Compensation: Guaranteed $10/hr, 10hr/week, for 15 weeks. Additional work and compensation may be available. Work to start the June 15th. This experience can be used towards an appropriate internship upon request.
